What was your favorite thing about UCSF East Bay?

The residents treat each other like family. Also, the attendings are very collegial and work as a team. This trickles down to the residents, who learn by example.

What would you like to share with applicants about your experiences at East Bay?

Because of the unique training at UCSF East Bay, which includes having both county hospital and Kaiser system hospital experiences, the residents graduate with great technical skills. In other words, everyone is able to operate independently without any hesitancy. This leads to an easier transition to becoming an attending or fellow.

Do you have a favorite story from residency at UCSF East Bay?

I have many amazing stories about my experiences as a surgical resident, but I do not think it is professional to divulge them. If we are lucky enough to have you join our residency program, I would be happy to share them with you. I have very fond memories. As my chairman used to say, “You peak as a Chief Resident!” I think he meant that the happiest times are when you are a general surgery resident. I did not know that at the time, but he was right.
