Research at UCSF-East Bay
At UCSF-East Bay, research is a centerpiece of our program. Research by faculty and residents at UCSF-East Bay covers a wide spectrum of clinical and basic surgical sciences. Upon completion of their PGY-3 year, residents are offered the optional opportunity to pursue their academic interests.
We recognize that each resident has diverse interests, thus we support a variety of pathways, including basic biomedical and translational research, clinical and health services research, global surgery and public health research, surgical education, surgical innovation, and enrolling in advanced degree programs. While some residents stay at Highland Hospital, Kaiser Oakland, or UCSF-Benioff Children's Hospital to do research, UCSF-East Bay also supports our residents in pursuing positions at other hospitals and programs across the country and around the world.
UCSF-East Bay recognizes that research salaries are often much lower than our normal resident pay scale. Therefore, UCSF-East Bay uniquely supplements the research salaries of our residents so that they get paid the same amount as their clinical peers. Residents are also eligible to keep their healthcare plans despite going elsewhere for research.
