Highland Hospital

Located in Oakland, CA, Highland Hospital is Alameda Health System's flagship hospital. Highland is home to five residency programs: Internal Medicine, Emergency medicine, Surgery, Oral-Maxillofacial Surgery, and Obstetrics/Gynecology. As the safety-net hospital for the county, Highland serves Alameda County's most vulnerable residents. Highland is a renowned Level I trauma center, and sees over 3500 trauma activations per year.

Kaiser Permanente Oakland

The Oakland Medical Center was the first of the Kaiser Permanente hospitals, and the first modern HMO hospital in the country. A new, 12-story, 349-bed full service hospital was built in 2014 and features 12 inpatient operating rooms including a modern robotic room and six outpatient operating rooms. As a center of excellence, Kaiser Oakland serves as the tertiary referral center for Hepatobiliary and Thoracic Surgery.

UCSF-Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland

Children's Hospital Oakland is a 193-bed pediatric medical center, and the largest and busiest on the West Coast between Los Angeles and Seattle. It is recognized nationally as a leader in pediatrics, and is the designated pediatric trauma center for all of Alameda County. It is also a major tertiary referral center for Northern California, with patients frequently transferred by helicopter from outlying areas.

UCSF Medical Center

UCSF Medical Center is a 790 bed, world-renowned tertiary referral center with 135,000 annual inpatient days. Recognized as a leader in medical education and research, UCSF ranks 8th in total federal research grants in the United States. A recent survey of case mix complexity at university teaching hospitals found UCSF to be in the 99th percentile nationally, and at least 30% higher than any other major teaching hospital. UCSF-East Bay residents rotate on the Transplant Surgery and Endocrine Surgery services.

San Francisco VAMC

The San Francisco VA Health Care System is a 1a complexity level facility with 112 beds, providing compassionate care to Veterans. The medical center is a National Center of Excellence for Cardiac Surgery, and has the largest funded research program in the Veterans Health Administration with $81 million in research expenditures in FY 2019. The medical center has been affiliated with the University of California, San Francisco School for medicine for 60 years.
