Grishma Patel, MD

Where did you grow up? Blythe, CA & Olive Branch, MS

Undergraduate: New York University

Medical School: Albert Einstein College of Medicine

Favorite thing to do outside the hospital:

I’m a bit of a granola girl/city girl hybrid. I love a good indie concert on a weeknight and exploring the best foodie spots in town just as much as I love hiking, getting outside, and tree-hugging a giant redwood. Basically, if there’s good food, good music, and/or a beautiful trail involved, I’m probably there!

If you weren’t a doctor, what would you be doing instead?

100% I would be running a coffee shop/bookstore somewhere tucked away in the mountains or near a chill beach.

Favorite dessert?

Lavender coconut cake - it tastes like a flower garden exploded in your mouth in the best way possible

Why East Bay?

I chose the East Bay because I wanted to train somewhere where caring for underserved patients is deeply woven into the community. Oakland has a powerful culture of resilience, advocacy, and looking out for one another, and I wanted to be part of that. Growing up in rural California and Mississippi and then training in the Bronx showed me how much a patient’s access to care and the systems around them can shape their health. I wanted to continue learning how to care for patients within that reality while becoming the kind of surgeon who can advocate for them both in and beyond the operating room. The East Bay felt like a place where that kind of medicine is both needed and possible.

Everything lemony, lemon blueberry muffins

Why East Bay?

I wanted to be at a safety net hospital that is a level 1 trauma center, and to be close to family in California. Getting to live the the Bay is an added bonus!
